If you keep showing up, you’ll almost certainly break through – but probably not in the way you expected or intended. You need enough persistence to keep working and enough flexibility to enjoy success when it comes in a different form than you imagined. -James Clear, Author of Atomic Habits
“Persistence” is continuous effort in the face of “obstacles”. A perfect example is my morning drive to work. I will persist through traffic jams, accidents, and poor weather conditions to get to work. I will not be deterred. And, I have 100% success rate of arriving at my destination. Why? Because never have I ever thought about not showing up to work.
You probably have similar examples in your own life. Times when you showed up and continued to put in the effort in the face of perceived “obstacles”.
And, you will probably agree, that persistence was not only necessary, but it allowed you to get to your “destination”.
Fast forward to today, and your current health/mobility challenges, it would make sense that persistence is a valuable quality.
But Houston, we have a little problem. If you feel “frustrated” more often than not, “persistence” could be the problem.
You see, persistence is necessary and good. Perseverance, a close cousin, is also extremely valuable. Endure setbacks. Be adaptable and pivot when “problems” arise. Maintain a steadfast resolve to achieve your goal. All qualities of a “successful” person.
But at what cost? And, what if I told you there is a chance you won’t achieve your goal? Would the persisting have been worth it? Would the “overwhelm”, “frustration”, and potential “disappointment” have been worth it?
I don’t present this question to discourage you in any way from continuing on the path. And I am not saying your won’t achieve your goal. But what if…..
If you get a little sinking feeling in your heart, there is a solution that James Clear perfectly articulates.
Persist, yes. This will keep you moving toward your goal when the going gets tough.
And
Maintain an open-mind regarding what success looks like.
Although uncomfortable, could you be content walking with a slight “limp”?
Could you imagine a future you that is more active, eating “healthier”, and feeling more energy and not be a size 4?
Could you imagine a future of going to theme parks and traveling to see your family if it meant you occasionally needed to use a wheelchair?
Could you feel a sense of accomplishment if you walked a 5k instead of jogging a half marathon?
Could you be content living in a lower income neighborhood, driving a 10 year old car, and wearing “off brand” clothes for the rest of your life?
Persistence is necessary. And there is something that feels really good about knowing you persevered through obstacles and set backs to achieve your goals.
But equally important, is finding moments of joy throughout the process.
And maybe, just maybe, the outcome God has in store for you is way better than you could have ever imagined.
The courage to change
“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” – James Baldwin The other day I was helping a friend of a friend who requested my guidance to design an exercise routine to lose weight. She wanted me to give her a plan she...
Refined by fire
"Life tests us like gold in a furnace, but the fire only purifies, never destroys." — Unknown There is no greater "furnace" in life than losing your mobility. Whether you are 30 or 70 coming to terms with losing a physical ability that enabled you to do the things you...
The weight of unfinished business
The other day my mom and I were on the phone reminiscing about my childhood and I was trying to recall the name of a particular neighborhood that we both loved….. to no avail. It drove me nuts well into the night. I would attempt to work on other things, yet images of...
Be Greedy
There are lots of things to love about fall. Most people don't love raking leaves…… Unless you are a kid. It makes me think of a Japanese proverb.... "If you feel like you have lost everything, remember this, trees lose their leaves every year, yet they still stand...
No Contracts In Life
From the time I was an infant, without fail, when I behaved in a particular manner, something happened. If I cried, I got fed. As I got older, if I received a good grade, I was rewarded. In college, studying (a lot) resulted in a degree. When I started my first “real...
Blocking out the noise
"It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson The experts say we have...
Pause over Pursuit
I spend my days helping people just like yourself solve “problems”. Its the part of my “job” I love the most. You see, when I was a kid I would intentionally take things apart just so I could figure out how to put it back together. And though, I believe it was a...
New Year’s Habits That Last
January 1. A new year. A “fresh start”. I know it is just a turn of the page on the calendar, but it signifies so much. It truly is a new beginning. An opportunity to tackle new challenges and create a vision for what is possible. Statistics will show that the most...
The Art of Letting Go
I have attempted water skiing a few times in my life. Until I realized, among other things, I don’t enjoy my face slamming into the arguably unforgiving surface of the water. Yup, I have tried and tried and….. failed and failed. It has been over 20 years since my last...
The Mere Ownership Effect
The other day I was trying to learn a new software and my limited tech skills are once again putting a wrench in the process. Or at the very least, putting old rusty bolts in a new machine. If you know you know. I decided it would be so much easier to “phone a friend”...
Persistence is tough when you are four years into this journey and you realize that you are forever changed. Your steps are a daily battle, yes they are better- you are pretty sure footed, but distances seem elusive. Your arm can pull, but it struggles to push. Your speech still slurs when you are tired.
What makes persistence alluring? At the end of the day I think it’s perspective…. I actively choose gratitude and praise for what I can do, the help that I do receive and God’s power and glory in ‘surround sound.’
Are my efforts perfect? Goodness no! I miss the mark regularly, complete with stale potato chip – flat Dr.Pepper pity moments. But persistence helps to start again. Mile Monday!, Tuesday Pool Day….. the joy moves forward. Thanks for the videos… looking forward to this ’walking one!’
Oh my gosh Jean, this is so helpful. You are able to explain this from a first person perscpective that I could not. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience and how you maintain hope in this difficult time. Keep going! And stay persistent!
“Even if” … has been my go to statement instead of “what if?”
It allows me to live in peace over fear.
Thank you for your musings Tara and constant help with our struggles.
Yes Vickie! Even if…. is more fitting. Thanks for sharing!
