If you have been around the sun enough times, you have probably been impacted by the “C word”. Cancer. With that said, I am sure you are like me in that you have been curious at one time or another…. “am I at risk”? Or maybe, like me, you already know you are at risk (due to a strong family history). If so, like me, maybe you actively seek out ways to mitigate your chances of becoming a statistic. If so, maybe also similar to me, you are extremely curious about a documentary titled “The C Word”.

This C Word is a documentary released in 2016 survivor Meghan O’Hara offers hope and attempts to change the the way people think about this often feared disease. In this film O’Hara teams up with Dr. David Servan-Shreiber who is not only a cancer researcher, but someone living with a cancer diagnosis. In this well researched film, O’Hara and Dr. David reveal the lifestyle factors that account for 70% of all cancers….smoking, processed foods, stress, contaminants and a sedentary lifestyle. “Narrated and executive produced by Morgan Freeman, The C Word is an unflinching look at our complacency with cancer culture, the vibrant cast of characters who are changing the game, and the tools we already have to beat the dreaded scourge of our time”

Who should watch The C Word?

If you have ever wondered if you are at risk for cancer or you want to know how to prevent your chances of getting that dreaded cancer diagnosis, this film is for you.

If you know you are engaging in some behaviors that might place you at risk for developing cancer and want that little extra push that will give you the desire to change, this film is for you.

Or, if you are someone living with a cancer diagnosis and feel that medical treatment just isn’t enough, this film is for you.

Regardless, you will finish watching this film feeling more encouraged that you have more power than you think you do over this terrible disease.

Review

Overall, I think this film does an excellent job of explaining the “why” behind the “what”. You will learn why obesity is the leading risk factor for developing cancer. Furthermore, you will learn how food impacts a cancer cell and how to make better food choices to decrease your risk. Spoiler alert, stop eating processed foods. But that is just the beginning. You will also learn why whole foods and specific vegetables might be the secret weapon.

In conclusion, I would recommend this film as I think it is engaging and not only talks about “the science” of cancer, but also incorporates great stories of real life people overcoming their cancer diagnosis by making changes to their lifestyle.
