It can be so easy to get into the “religion” of the latest diet trend. I have been there. This, of course, comes with the inherent risk of a state of utter confusion. Case and point….today, vegetables are “bad”. Or, maybe I got that wrong. Maybe it was meat is bad and “causes cancer”. Yes, that’s what the vegans are telling me. Hold up. ✋ That’s not right. The “paleos” are telling me fat is the secret weapon to longevity. No wait, 🤔….. I remember a doctor mentioning fat will raise my cholesterol. That’s right, fat raises cholesterol and will surely send me to an early grave……….. And that’s just this week on “the twitter”. Ok, you get my point If you know, you know.

Enter Beyond Food.

Released in 2017, beyond food is the first “nutrition documentary” that I have seen that doesn’t send you down the rabbit hole of some dogma religion. I mean “diet”. Nope, this film gets inside the head of a diverse group of people. Biohackers, paleo, vegan, neuroscientists, athletes, foragers, ranchers, farmers, and gut scientists give their experiences about how they view food, the joy of eating, and what they are doing to live their best lives.

“Our main purpose is to share the lessons from the journey we lived because it changed our lives”

Who should watch Beyond Food?

If you have tried and failed at “dieting” or you feel powerless when it comes to controlling your eating behaviors the amazing people in this film will put your mind at ease. Many of them recount their own journey from a life of “junk food” to making “better” food choices.

If you feel trapped in a restrictive diet that is making you miserable, you might restore your hope that one size does not fit all. You will gain clarity that within the nutrition space, different strokes for different folks.

Maybe you are someone who just feels discouraged, depressed, or lethargic and feels like your lifestyle choices might have something to do with it. If that is you, you are not alone. Even the world-class athletes in this film have been there. They will give you hope.

What I loved about Beyond Food

I loved hearing from people I respect in the “health space” share their mistakes and how they don’t believe in “perfection” but progress.

Honest Criticism About Beyond Food

The film is a little disjointed and just hops around from person to person with no real flow. You never get the idea that there was a clear storyline and/or objective. In fact, I had to go back and read the film description. Once I did that, it made more sense. But still, really not an engaging format.

Final Thoughts About Beyond Food

I still recommend it. Hearing the variety of “opinions” of the “ideal lifestyle” was a good reminder to believe nothing at first glance. Be curious and question everything about nutrition at first glance. Oh, and make food and eating fun. It is possible. 😊
