Broccoli Sprouts

Broccoli sprouts may be small in size, but they pack a powerful punch when it comes to health benefits. These tiny sprouts are loaded with nutrients and antioxidants that can help protect against a range of health issues, from cancer to heart disease.

More than that, broccolis spouts are a tasty, somewhat spicy, crunchy bit of deliciousness guaranteed to take any sandwich or salad to the next level!

What are Broccoli Sprouts?

Broccoli sprouts something called a microgreen. Microgreens are smaller than baby greens. They are harvested soon after sprouting before a plant has matured. As a result, flavor and nutrients are condensed into a smaller package.

In fact, “5-7 day old seed sprouts can often offer more nutrition benefits than the mature plant” said Emily Ho, nutrition professor and director of the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University in Corvallis.

Cancer Fighting Properties of Broccoli Sprouts

One of the most impressive benefits of broccoli sprouts is their ability to fight cancer.

Research has shown that broccoli sprouts contain up to 100 times more of the cancer-fighting compound sulforaphane than mature broccoli. So, if you’re looking for a simple and delicious way to boost your health, adding broccoli sprouts to your diet is definitely worth considering.

In fact, some studies have found that consuming broccoli sprouts can reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer, including breast, prostate, and colon cancer.

Heart Health

In addition to their cancer-fighting properties, broccoli sprouts are also great for your heart. They contain high levels of fiber, which can help lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease. They also contain antioxidants that can help protect your heart from damage caused by free radicals.

Skin Health

Broccoli sprouts are also a great source of vitamins and minerals. They are particularly high in vitamin C, which is important for immune function and skin health. They also contain vitamin K, which is important for bone health, and potassium, which can help regulate blood pressure.

Conclusion

I recently started growing my own broccoli sprouts and I was amazed and how easy it is to grow. But more than that I LOVE having these on hand to add to salads, sandwiches, and wraps, or use them as a garnish for soups and stews. An added bonus is that you can also blend them into smoothies or juices for an extra boost of nutrition.  Furthermore, as someone who is cost-conscious, the seeds and growing equipment are relatively cheap.
