“Fat is bad”. That is what I believed for most of my life. Of course, this is no surprise to anyone who grew up in the 90’s. Fast forward to my “adult years” and a career working with people who have suffered strokes and other neurologic injuries, I have become increasingly curious about risk factors that might contribute to these often times debilitating conditions. Could these conditions be prevented? Is a high fat diet to blame? Or did the advice of the 90’s mislead us into a couple of decades of increasing disease? Enter That Sugar Film.  An engaging documentary that transformed my outlook and opinions on the food industry, root cause of disease, and so much more. A must watch for anyone who is interested in optimizing your health by avoiding the hidden dangers of an industry devoted to making you and I consume more sugar. But more importantly, compel you to enter the conversations around the food industry, “sugar conspiracies”, health, and disease.

That Sugar Film featuring Damon Gameau and David Fry was released in 2015. This documentary takes you on an incredible journey around the world as they uncover the jaw-dropping evolution of how we have become a species addicted to sugar.  Damon couples his investigative journalism while running an experiment in real-time showing what happens to the body that consumes 42 teaspoons of sugar per day for 2 months (the amount of sugar consumed by most of society). Oh, and spoiler alert, Damon is the test subject.

Why should you watch That Sugar Film?

First, this isn’t a documentary. This is a movie with a plot that includes Damon’s own health journey where he provides deep insights into how his mind and body transformed as he consumed more sugar.

Second, the scientific information is on point and super easy to understand. Seriously, someone as young as grade school will leave this move being able to explain a sugar molecule, insulin, insulin resistance, diabetes, the liver, and so much more.

There is no way you will watch this movie and NOT be compelled to enter the conversation regarding the food industry, the government, and the alarming increase of disease around the world.
